US And British Embassies In Yemen Remain Closed

For the second day the US and British Embassies in Sana, the Yemen capital, remain closed.

The closure is said to be due to a continuing threat from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the terrorist organisation linked to the attempted bombing of a US flight in Detroit on Christmas Day.

Warnings of imminent attacks had been picked up three weeks ago by American military and intelligence personnel. Information led them to believe that 4 suicide bombers had travelled to the Sana area to make an attack against Western targets, most likely US and British Embassies. Officials have said that tactical military strikes have since thwarted those attacks.

The joint US and Yemeni military strikes are said to have killed three of the would-be suicide bombers and the fourth was captured alive by Yemeni special operations forces, with his suicide vest still intact.

Over the weekend the Transportation Security Administration issued new regulations, passengers from 14 nations are to be subjected to “full-body pat-down and physical inspection of property” before they are able to board any aircraft destined for the United States. Those countries include Pakistan, Nigeria and Yemen, and the four nations still listed as state sponsors of terrorism: Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria.

President Obama’s counterterrorism Chief, John O. Brennan said “Al Qaeda has several hundred members, in fact, in Yemen, and they’ve grown in strength,”.

It is still unclear when the Embassies will re-open.

Attack On US Military Base In Texas – UPDATE

Posted in Crime, news, terrorism with tags , , , , , , , , , on 11/06/2009 by securityscene

Twelve people have been killed and at least 31 wounded as a number of people open fire at a US military base in Texas. The base, Fort Hood, is one of the largest military installations in the United States.

The attack happened on 5th November 2009 at around 1:30pm Central Time (1930 UTC). Eyewitnesses state that there were more than one shooter dressed in military uniform, one of whom was shot and killed, two others fled to a nearby facility and details suggest that they have now been taken in to custody.

Various news service websites are claiming the dead shooter is Major Malik Nadal Hasan, the identity of the two captured men is still unknown.

A Major in the US Army is a senior ranking general office, above that of Captain and just below Lieutenant Colonel.

Lt. General Robert W. Cone, Commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood, has called the attack “a terrible tragedy, stunning” and stated that the community is “absolutely devastated”.

President Obama called the Fort Hood shootings a “horrific outburst of violence.”

“It is difficult enough to lose” soldiers overseas, but it is “horrifying that they should lose their lives at an Army base in the U.S.” he said.

Cone has said that the motives for the attack are still unclear and the FBI has been quick to say that the shootings do not have a terrorist link.

The gunmen entered a facility on the base called the Soldier Readiness Facility, soldiers attend this facility for their last medical check-up before deployment, in this case to Iraq.

“The gunmen opened fire and essentially due to the quick respond of the police forces was killed,” Cone said.

Major Hasan was killed by a civilian police officer, but not before one officer was killed in the shootout.

Fort Hood’s website currently has a message, “Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel. This is not a Drill. It is an Emergency Situation.”

The Department of Homeland Security has said that it is still gathering information and that the Army is taking the lead on the investigation, FBI agents have been deployed from Waco and Austin, Texas to assist.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan - Suspected Shooter On Fort Hood Base

An as of yet unnamed US congressman’s office has said that the two other suspect soldiers arrested after the shootings at Fort Hood have now been released. A press conference with the bases Commanding Officer is due shortly, currently been delayed by 30 minutes so far.

The cousin of the dead shooter has said that the Major had claimed that he was unhappy and had suffered abuse from his colleges in the army, this claim is as of yet unconfirmed. Hasan was a military psychiatrist who was due to be deployed to Iraq for the first time.

Officials have confirmed today that Hasan was not killed in the attack, having been shot a number of times he is currently in a stable but critical condition in hospital.

USA Possibly Creating Special Interrogation Unit

The United States is currently considering the creation of a special unit of professional interrogators who will be tasked with handling high-value terror suspects.

A government official had told two leading US newspapers about the new unit under condition of anonymity, stating that the government task force on interrogation methods hasn’t yet reported to President Obama.

The role of the team will be more focused on gathering intelligence from some of the Worlds biggest and most important terrorists including Al-Qaeda members and members of other terrorist groups, rather than building criminal cases for prosecution. They will also be used to devise new interrogation methods.

Forming of the new group would not alter the Obama administration’s decision banning harsh interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, which simulates drowning, this was authorised by the Bush administration.

The officials said that they have yet to determine which agency should run the new unit, but it won’t be left solely to the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA headed up the interrogations under the Bush administration.

This select, small and specialised interrogation unit would be composed of personnel from the federal government’s intelligence, military, and law agencies, with the CIA and FBI playing big parts.

Manhunt For Man Who Threatened To Kill Obama – CAPTURED – UPDATED

A nationwide manhunt is underway for a man from Clifton Park, New York. Daniel J. Murray, 36, is accused of telling a bank teller in St. George, Utah “We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States”.

Daniel opened an account with Zion’s First National Bank in Utah on 19th May, depositing $85,000. He had asked the bank if it was solvent and said to staff “With all this mess going on under President Obama with the banks and economy, I’m sure if citizens happen to lose their money, they will rise up and we could see killings and deaths.”

Eight days after this he returned to the bank to withdraw $12,698. He was advised that he didn’t have the correct identification and allegedly said “Not to be disrespectful, but if I don’t get this money, someone is going to die.” The Bank’s manager intervened and agreed to hand over the money. The next day he returned to withdraw the rest of the money, all $72,000 and closed the account.

The bank teller told Secret Service agents that while she counted the cash, Murray began to ramble. “We are 94 million miles from the sun, and are in between the sun and moon, and the eagle that flies between them, and it’s a giant step for mankind,” he reportedly said. “I have traveled thousands of miles to be here and know things that are going to happen. … The banking system will fail and people will die. … There will be chaos in the world.”

He then said the words that made him the subject of a nationwide search “we are on a mission to kill the president of the United States.”

Police have said that Murray has eight registered firearms, including semi-automatic pistols and revolvers, some capable of carrying 15 rounds of ammunition at a time.

Neighbors of the man have said that they used to call him Cape Man as he would sometimes stroll down the road wearing a cape, talking to himself and gesturing wildly. His father Michael Murray also said of his son “He’s sick. He’s been sick for about 10 years,”. He also added that Daniel is mentally ill and not dangerous.

The Secret Service have confimed that they have arrested fugitive Daniel J. Murray. The arrest was made at about 7pm  of Friday 5th June in the parking lot of the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, by local police and Secret Service agents. “He was arrested without incident” according to Malcolm Wiley with the US Sercret Service. He would not give any more information about the arrest or confirm how they knew Murray’s whereabouts.
