Posted in Crime, news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 11/29/2009 by securityscene

Four police officers have been shot dead in what has been described as an ambush in the state of Washington.

The officers were killed near McChord Air Force Base in Parkland, Washington state. Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer has told local television stations that the officers were killed around 8.30am local time on Sunday 29th November 2009.

Officers were reported to be sitting in Forza Coffee shop in the Lakewood area, south of Tacoma on Steele Street. They are said to have been sitting in the coffee shop with their computers when the gunmen entered and open fired.

Mr Troyer said that the investigators believe that the police officers were targeted and that this wasn’t a robbery.

“It was just a flat out ambush,” he told a local paper.

The men are still believed to be at large and a man hunt is under way.

UPDATE

Theron Zahn of KOMO-TV is reported as saying that a huge police operation is underway to locate the person or person’s who shot dead 4 police officers in what is described as an ambush. The nearby McChord Air Force Base has effectively been “locked down”.

“Police helicopters are in the air using their infra-red cameras for anyone who may be hiding nearby. It is a massive manhunt.”

KOMO-TV has said that police are currently offering a $10,000 reward leading to the arrest of the gunmen.

Police investigators have said that the officers were in uniform and their marked police cars were parked outside of the coffee shop, making it more likely that the men had been targeted by the shooter/s.

The gunman is said to be a black man, 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 9 inches tall, in his late 20s or 30s, with scruffy facial hair. The man was wearing a black coat and blue jeans and fled the scene via Steele Street.

It is believed that the gunman acted alone in the shooting, but police aren’t ruling out the possibility that other people were involved.

If you have any information about the shooting you should call 866-977-2362 to speak with police.

We will bring you more details as they become available.

Senator Writes To President Over Fort Hood Attack Likely Terrorism

Posted in Crime, Politics, news, terrorism with tags , , , , , , , , , , on 11/18/2009 by securityscene

US Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas has written to President Obama to express his concerns over the Administrations reluctance to call the Fort Hood attack and act of terrorism.

Senator Cornyn says in his letter, it appears increasingly probable that the Fort Hood attacker, Major Hasan, had been motivated by his fanatical religious ideology and that it should serve as a wake up call for federal officials.

He is calling on the President and Administration to make sure that political correctness does not get in the way of preserving and protecting the US from potential attacks against National Security.

This is a copy of the full letter sent to the Whitehouse;

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama:

I sincerely appreciate you joining us at Fort Hood, Texas, last week for the memorial ceremony honoring the victims of the horrific November 5 attack. Thank you for your participation and your moving, heartfelt words. In the wake of this massacre, my prayers remain with the fallen, the injured, and their families, as I know yours do.

I look forward to questioning Attorney General Holder on Wednesday about the role that federal law enforcement agencies played in this particular case, as well as what actions they are taking to prevent radical Islam from finding a home in the U.S. Armed Forces. The federal government has a fundamental duty to our men and women in uniform to safeguard them against avoidable harm in the course of their service. We must protect the protectors whenever and wherever we are able, especially at home in the United States. Our government failed the brave Americans who were killed and wounded at Fort Hood. The devastation inflicted on them was preventable, and it is of paramount importance that we ascertain exactly where the system broke down.

The question of how this could ever happen on U.S. soil must be answered as soon as possible, so as to foreclose the possibility of future attacks of this nature. I understand that a myriad of investigations are underway, and I appreciate the importance of ascertaining the facts before making any judgments. Nonetheless, it seems increasingly likely that Islamist terrorism is to blame for this senseless attack. I was pleased that you alluded to this in your remarks at Fort Hood, stating that, “no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts; no just and loving God looks upon them with favor.” I could not agree more.

Islamist terrorism represents one of the single most dangerous threats to the national security of the United States. As you know, this enemy seeks the complete and total destruction of our nation, our government, and our entire American way of life. As the 9/11 Commission stated in its report, “The enemy is not just ‘terrorism.’ It is the threat posed specifically by Islamist terrorism, by Bin Ladin and others who draw on a long tradition of extreme intolerance within a minority strain of Islam that does not distinguish politics from religion, and distorts both.”

Al Qaeda, in a 1998 fatwa signed by its leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, instructed that: “to kill the Americans and their allies—civilian and military—is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it . . . .” Similarly, in a 2006 propaganda video, al Qaeda specifically urged viewers to “go on a shooting spree” at a key military installation. As more and more facts surrounding the Fort Hood attack surface, it looks increasingly probable that the alleged attacker, Major Nidal Hasan, heeded these terrorist calls to violence, compelled by a fanatical religious ideology. If Islamist terrorism was the driving force behind the senseless violence at Fort Hood, as it seems to be, this attack must serve as a call to action for the Federal Government.

The Fort Hood mass murder would not be the first time our service members have been violently assaulted from within their own ranks by an individual driven to act primarily by his religious ideology. As you may know, on March 23, 2003, during the initial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, an Army Sergeant named Hasan Akbar attacked his fellow service members in Kuwait with grenades and small arms, murdering two of them and wounding more than a dozen others. Akbar’s diary passages illustrated a strong religious motivation behind his actions: “I will have to decide to kill my Muslim brothers fighting for Saddam Hussein or my battle buddies. . . . I may not have killed any Muslims, but being in the Army is the same thing. I may have to make a choice very soon on who to kill.”

We must not blame Islam as a whole for this attack or others of its kind; yet at the same time, we cannot ignore the indisputable fact that some followers of Islam interpret their religion’s scriptures and teachings as a mandate for the mass murder of innocents. Evidence indicating that terrorist activity may be in the offing must always be run to ground; federal agencies must follow every lead and look into every possible threat, regardless of whose particular sensitivities might be offended in the process. We must never allow the safety of those who defend our freedom to be made a secondary priority to political correctness.

Sincerely,
JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

India Puts Nuclear Power Plants On Alert Over Possible Terror Plot

Posted in Crime, news, terrorism with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 11/17/2009 by securityscene

Nuclear power plants have been put on alert over fears that they may be a target for a terrorist attack or espionage of some sort.

Authorities have tightened the security around their facilities, in particular the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay. Fears of an attack came after a man was arrested in the United States on charges of plotting attacks in India.

US national and terror suspect David Coleman Headley was found to have travelled to various Indian states that have Nuclear facilities. On advice from US intelligence the Indian Home ministry decided to step up security around the nuclear plants.

Further fears were realized when on Sunday several documents containing defense-related and sensitive issues were reported to have been seized from a Pakistani nation who was arrested at Gandhi International Airport on suspicion of espionage.

Information has also surfaced that Headly and another terrorist suspect, Pakistani born Canadian citizen Tahawwur Rana, had travelled to Mumbai but left a few days before last year’s attacks on the city, and was in Pakistan when the attacks were carried out.

Intelligence sources in the United States claim that David Headley met a leader of al-Qaeda linked to Harakat-ul Jihad Islami and contacted members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group that New Delhi blames for the Mumbai attacks of 26 November 2009 in where 166 people were killed.

Five Men From Manchester Are Suspected Terror Recruiters

Posted in Crime, news, terrorism with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 11/16/2009 by securityscene

It is alleged that the five men arrested in Manchester and London on the 16th November 2009 were recruiters of terrorists, signing people up to join terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.

A 62 year old Muslim preacher was arrested in his home in Bolton, a prominent preacher around the Manchester and Bolton area teaching the Koran at various different mosques. It is possible that a position teaching the Koran in mosques could serve as an ideal recruiting platform for future terrorists.

Police also conducted a raid on a hotel near Heathrow which resulted in the arrest of a 26 year old man. Police will not confirm if this man was preparing to fly from Heathrow to the terror training camp in Afghanistan.

The investigation was the culmination of a year long investigation into recruitment of terrorists from within the United Kingdom. Assistance Chief Constable Dave Thompson of Greater Manchester Police said “This is a complex and ongoing investigation, which has now reached the point where it was necessary to make arrests and speak to a number of people.”

It is unknown if this operation and convert investigation had been completed or if the police moved in early due to the possibility of one of the men leaving the country to receive his terrorist training.

Police Arrest 5 Men In Manchester Terror Raids

Counter terrorism offices carried out raids on properties throughout the Greater Manchester area including Longsight, Levenshulme, Bolton and Stalybridge.

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism, one of the men is an un-named Muslim preacher who teaches the Koran at a number of mosques in the Manchester area.

One of the five men arrested was picked up in a raid at a Heathrow airport.

Police have said the raids were a low key affair, armed police weren’t involved and they have stressed that there was no immediate threat to the public.

The men were arrested as part of an investigation into terror camps in Afghanistan, it is believed that the men were looking to hatch a terrorist plot overseas rather than in the UK.

North-West Counter Terrorism officers raided the three addresses at around 4am, with around 40 plain clothes officers involved in the raids and searching of the property.

The raids took place in a mobile phone shop and flat on Stockport Road, Levenshulme. There were no arrests made at this address.

A 52 year old man was arrested at a house on Victoria Terrace, Longsight and a 21 year old at Bowdon Avenue in Fallowfield.

One man, 27, was arrested in Stalybridge, Rydal Walk. The Muslim preacher, 62,  was arrested at his home on Willows Lane, Deane, Bolton.

Lastly a 26 year old man was caught in raids at a Heathrow Airport hotel.

ACCOLC – Access Overload Control

Posted in Technology, terrorism with tags , , , , , , , , , on 11/15/2009 by securityscene

ACCOLC (Access Overload Control) is a British procedure for restricting mobile phone usage in the event of a major emergency. It is similar to the GTPS (Government Telephone Preference Scheme) used for landline phones.

This allows the mobile phone networks to restrict access to a specified area to pre-registered mobile phone numbers only. ACCOLC will usually be requested by the Police Incident Commander but the request can also come from the Cabinet Office.

The system is designed to restrict civilian access to the mobile network during an emergency when it is important that lines are kept free for priority emergency service personnel.

Mobile phones work on a cell by cell basis, these towers are spread all over the country and your phone will pick up the nearest available cell or mast and use that to make the call. Once the ACCOLC has been invoked the network will find the cells in the area of the emergency and begin to run the system on those masts.

Those phones that have been registered with the networks will be allowed access to those cells while people who haven’t will receive a fast beep (called a Fast Busy Signal), if the user receives a recorded message saying lines are busy or a normal engaged tone then this will indicate that ACCOLC is not being used.

While this can be a frustration or a nuisance to normal mobile phone users it is often a necessary and important process for regaining control during an emergency situation.

It’s worth noting that not all callers are barred from making calls in an area where ACCOLC is in operation, if the call is made to an emergency service number (112, 999) it will go through as normal.

The Access Overload Control was activated when officers of the City Of London Police spoke to managers at O2 plc, this was during the early stages of the 7 July bombings in London at Aldgate tube station. This limited the calls in the area to those police staff that had their sim card details registered for this priority access.

It is also reported that the BBC and other Broadcasters had reporters who had numbers registered with the service as part of their public-service remit in keeping the people of the UK informed about what was going on.

During the 7 July bombings the police decided not to shut down the entire network, however many people thought it was, as they were unable to make calls in the first hours of the terrorist attacks, as stated above those people would have heard a recorded message or a normal engaged tone.

The Terrorist Hunters: The Ultimate Inside Story Of Britain’s Fight Against Terror

The Terrorist Hunters by Andy HaymanBy Andy Hayman with Margaret Gilmore

Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman, CBE, QPM, was in overall command of the UK’s national counter-terrorism offensive, at the centre of every major terrorist investigation – overt and covert – of the past five years.

He handled the Metropolitan Police’s response to 7/7 and dealt with the politically explosive murder of the Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko.

Based at New Scotland Yard, in charge of thousands of Special Branch and counter-terrorism officers in the UK and across the globe, deciding strategy, working directly with the Prime Minister with a budget of GBP500 million, Hayman is able to give unprecedented insight into key top-level crisis meetings he attended with intelligence chiefs and political leaders worldwide.

In an inspirational and at times heart-breaking account, he describes how he led a dedicated team of men and women, committed to protecting the UK from dangerous enemies. Hayman lived through the pain and soul-searching when terrorists did succeed – and the pride when intelligence officers prevented attacks.

Andy Hayman leaves no holds barred in his analysis of the way law enforcers tackle terrorism. He outlines his radical blueprint for the future to protect the public, in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond.

If you thought you knew the stories behind the news, you’ll realise you didn’t until you read this book.

Five days after The Terrorist Hunters was released it was banned by the High Court at the request of the Attorney General for England and Wales. All copies were withdrawn from sale. It is now republished and available in its full original text.

JLS Christmas Lights Switch On Fiasco

Posted in news with tags , , , , , , , , , on 11/15/2009 by securityscene

JLSBirmingham city centers Christmas lights switch-on has resulted in four people being taken to hospital and many more injured.

It was set to be a switch on to remember with X-Factor runners up JLS and hit girl band the Sugababes, Calvin Harris, Tinchy Stryder and Natalie Imbruglia and many others due to play a free concert to celebrate the start of the festivities.

However as JLS took to the stage a surge against the metal barriers, penning in the crowd, collapsed leaving around 60 people needing treatment. The concert and the switch-on was promptly cancelled to try and avoid further injuries, as West Midlands Ambulance service paramedics set up a special unit to treat the wounded.

The city center expected around 5,000 fans to attend the show, but reports say there were close to 21,000 on the night which over stretched the safety and security measures that had been put in place.

Reports from the ambulance service have said that one woman in her 30’s suffered serious crush injuries to her pelvis, shoulder and leg. Another woman is reported to have broken her ankle. A teenage boy fractured his wrist and a girl had suffered crush injuries to her back and legs.

An ambulance spokeswoman said “The remaining 56 patients suffered minor crush injuries and a range of minor medical complaints. They did not require further hospital treatment and were all discharged by ambulance crews at the scene.”

Birmingham City Council have defended the decision to abandon the event and have said they have started an investigation into the situation.
